... a quiet wish in the wind ...
Having loved bats and the idea of how they live, I wanted to make a bat for a friend who's coat of arms incorporated this unusual heraldic creature. This friend has been a great support to me - and so the motif proved to be very apt.
The coat of arms showed the bat the 'wrong way up', so I spent some time researching these mammals and discovered that the only time a bat is to be found with its head upwards is when a 'she bat' is nursing her young. Apparently, she holds her babies in her 'skirt' and pulls them up to her breast to feed.
I wonder if it gives her a headache - the way it might do to if we were to hang up-side-down to feed our young?
